Ecological Consulting & Micro-Estate Management

Most homeowners have a fragmented approach to their land: a mow crew that cuts everything flat, a tree service that removes canopy but ignores soil, and a homeowner stuck in the middle trying to manage it all.

When you join the Stewardship Program, you are hiring a Director of Grounds. I act as the single point of contact for your property’s ecological health. My job is to hold the long-term vision, coordinate your vendors, and personally execute the delicate restoration work that standard crews miss. Whether you have a 0.2-acre lot or a 5-acre estate, you get the same level of attentive, specialized care.

The 4-Season Cadence

I schedule based on biology, not the calendar. Your subscription includes at least 4 strategic visits per year: 28 banked hours divided at the start of your membership within your unique site-plan. These dates will be chosen to work with you schedule, and most importantly with your land's needs. The following are just a few examples of the type of work you can expect during each visit:

❄️ Q1: The Spring Refresh (Jan-March) The "Deep Clean" | Extended Visit (~7 Hours) As the soil hits 50°F,  prepare the beds for the growing season.

  • The Work: I remove winter weeds before they seed, perform cutbacks on perennials, and execute the "Deep Weeding" (digging roots, not just pulling tops).  This may also be when we cut back last years perennial growth left for overwintering wildlife.
  • The Goal: To reset the stage so your desirable plants have zero competition when they wake up.

🌱 Q2: The Summer Edit (Mar -June) The "Course Correction" | Standard Visit (~3.5 Hours) The "Green Blur" has arrived. I step in to manage the chaos.

  • The Work: I perform the "Chelsea Chop" on fall bloomers (to prevent flopping), edit back aggressive plants, and patrol for invasive vines hiding in the shade.
  • The Goal: To ensure the garden looks intentional, not overgrown, during the peak of summer heat.

☀️ Q3: The Fall Restoration (July -September) The "New Year" | Extended Visit (~7 Hours) Ecologically, fall is the best time for planting and root growth.

  • The Work: This is our primary window for installing new habitat (billed separately) and managing Stiltgrass before it drops seed. I assess what thrived and what failed.
  • The Goal: To establish strong root systems before winter and maximize the "Second Spring."

🍂 Q4: The Winter Structure (Oct -December) The "Bones" | Standard Visit (~3.5 Hours) With the leaves down, we can see the architecture of the garden.

  • The Work: I perform surgical, structural pruning on deciduous trees and shrubs. I manage fallen leaves ("Soft Landings") to insulate beds rather than bagging valuable nutrients.
  • The Goal: To fix crossing branches, open airflow, and protect the soil for winter dormancy.

What Is Included?

Beyond the labor, you are securing oversight and peace of mind.

The "On-Call" Retainer

  • Digital Diagnosis: Text me a photo anytime. "Is this bug eating my leaves bad?", "This branch looks weird, is it rot?", "I saw this plant at the nursery, will it fit in my yard?". I reply with an expert answer within 24 hours. No charge.
  • Storm Spot-Checks: After major storms, if you are worried about a leaner or a hanger, I will swing by (when I’m in the neighborhood) to do a visual safety check for free.

 Vendor Coordination

  • Mow Crew Liaison: If necessary, I communicate directly with your mowing team to set deck heights and mark "No Mow" zones. You don't have to argue with them; I do. Dont have a regular mow crew? I can help facilitate that for you. Have a small yard? I offer a "mow package addon" for select Stewardship members priced at just $50 a mow (billed at time of service)
  • Arborist Referrals: If a tree needs removal, I don't just say "call someone." I connect you with my trusted partners and I meet them on-site to ensure they don't drop logs on your garden beds.

 Ecological Health Monitoring (The "Audit")

  • Soil Compaction Checks: I probe the soil around your high-value trees to ensure roots aren't suffocating.
  • Invasive Scouting: I check the perimeter for "Quiet Killers" (English Ivy, Wintercreeper, Stiltgrass) that are creeping in from neighbors.
  • Tree Triage: I inspect the trunks of your canopy trees for early signs of fungal stress or pests (like Scale or Borers) before it becomes a $3,000 removal job.

The Physical Labor (The "Hand Work")

  • Structural Pruning: I don't use hedge trimmers. I hand-prune shrubs to correct crossing branches, open airflow, and protect next year's blooms.
  • Ecological Weeding: I don't just rip everything out. I edit. I remove the invasives but leave the native volunteers (like Cedar or Holly seedlings) that you might want to keep. I pinch at the base, avoiding disturbing the soil and stirring up more weeds but depriving it of growth.
  • Biomass Management: I manage the leaves and fallen sticks. instead of bagging valuable nutrients, I use them to build soil in the beds ("Soft Landings")
  • and More!!

Where have the Lightning Bugs Gone???

When's the last time you said to yourself, "Wow... Where are all the Lightning bugs?!" I Simply cannot be the only one who has noticed.

DID YOU KNOW? Our Native Virginia fireflies (Photinus and Photuris species) spend TWO FULL YEARS as larvae living in leaf litter on the ground where they hunt snails, slugs, and other small invertebrates hidden in the leaves.

When we bad and remove every leaf each fall, we're literally throwing next summer's fireflies in the trash. The same goes for the thousands of species of ground-nesting native bees, butterfly pupae overwintering in stems, and the soil organisms that keep our land healthy.

'Tis the Season, when the sound of Gas-powered leaf blowers fill the air..... DID YOU KNOW? 2-stroke engines that combine oil & gas for fuel are environmental disasters. Running one gas blower emits the same pollution in just ONE hour, as a car driving 1,100+miles. Yes, Really.

2-stroke engines spray +30% of fuel unburnt as toxic mist- coating your yard, home, and lungs with aerosolized gas and oil.

When we use them to remove all of the leaves eliminates, we destroy firefly larvae and critical species of invertebrates and pollinators who require that layer to exist. Our quest for tidiness, is "tidying" away life itself.

This service aims to change that.

What I Do: Strategic Leaf Management

This isn't traditional "fall cleanup" so much as Intentional Habitat creation that keeps your yard looking carerd for while helping to bring back the fireflies to our summers.

During your consultation we (or I) will walk your property and identify places where the leaves can be intentionally moved to create overwintering habitat, if it exists. This can be a back corner of your yard, or under your azaleas, but the primary goal is to keep them whole. Alternatively, the next best option, albeit not for the fireflies, would be to mulch the leaves in-place and either fertilize your soil OR then move to a designated area as mulching. Once mulched, leaves not only break down quicker but they can look a lot more "intentional" if that is a concern.

My Spring Refresh & Cleanup services include:

  • Ecological  Leaf Management-an intentional alternative to conventional gas leaf blowers. I hand-rake or use electric blower to move leaves on-site OR  I can mulch in place
  • Light Hand pruning or trimming (timing-appropriate for each species)
  • Light weeding and bed maintenance
  • Invasive species identification and management protocol recommendations
  • English Ivy removal (and other hand-removable invasives)
  • Perennial and bulb division/propagation (Multiply your plants, for FREE!)
  • Plant installation ("You bought it, I'll plant it" for containerized plants)
  • Mulch spreading assistance (I can help arrange arborist chips as an ecological alternative - mulch not provided)
  • Just about anything, within reason, you need done around your yard to set it up for success the following year. This is professional levels "GroundsKeep", priced for every yard in suburbia and beyond.

Basic Installation "Packages" & Current Pricing

Currently, I am offering two streamlined packages while still in "phase 1" and bootstrapping my way into GardenWild's future.  Book before Dec 31, 2025 & recieve 20% off as a thank you for becoming a founding GardenWild partner!

Labor:

  • Full-Day: $400 $320 (Up to 7hrs)
  • Two-Day: $500 $400 (up to 12hrs over 2day period)

Plant & Materials Budgets:  All Plants & Materials are billed seperately. I will work with whatever you have to work with, but a good rule of thumb is to dedicate atleast as much for plants as you do for labor

These plant "budgets" are recommendations, not fixed amounts, and ultimately my priority is to always work within what works best for you.  They also can be fit to just about any sized space, adjusting the density and strategically planning. I use a combination of local nurseries and online vendors to make your budget go as far as possible! The best value comes with ordering bare-root (especially woodland/shady areas), Seed-based (For large meadows, Prairie & Pollinator gardens, and Lawn Conversions), or to catch our annual Spring Order where you get to take advantage of the wholesale pricing upfront!

My Service Fee*: This includes everything needed to create your Habitat installation minus the cost of any materials & plants needed. This fee covers 4-6 hours of on-site work (either in a single day or over several days depending on time of year, weather and other variables) for installation of plants, sourcing plants, tailored follow-up care instructions, & and all administrative and office hours used. Most projects will fall into this package regardless of size & scope, (larger and more intricate projects may need national on-site hours) it is often the number of individual plants itself & site prep that dictate the timetable more than anything. Any additional work hours required will be billed at $35hr and when possible, included in your direct estimate & quote.

*This package is a slimmed down version of the Native Habitat Installation packages I intend to offer in phase 2 of business that are more robust, but hinge on logistical aspects I am currently still trying to build. You Can View these future packages HERE. If you would like to be notified as soon as these are "live" I highly recommend sending me an email GardenWildServices@Gmail.com and I will personally let you know when that becomes available. ~ Kaleb

Cost of Plants & Supplies: Varies based on site size and plant selection - discussed during consultation. Thankfully here in the RVA metro we have multiple local growers and nurseries. Having multiple local growers, nurseries, & commercial greenhouses allows me to "shop around" and price- compare to make sure I am making your money go it's full worth. Ultimately my goal is to increase biodiversity & build beautiful habitat - so rest assured, I will always be looking for the most economical source for your plantings. Your estimate will include the pricing for which ever suppliers make most sense at that time.

 Deposit Required on ALL services:

To secure your session:

Deposit is 50% of project total OR Plants & Materials + 10% of labor, whichever is less.

In addition to Native Habitat installation, I am also available for just about* any garden task you need handled. This may include:

  • Strategic leaf management for firefly habitat
  • General fall/spring care and cleanup
  • Hand pruning or trimming (timing-appropriate)
  • Light weeding and bed maintenance
  •  Invasive species identification and removal
  • English Ivy removal from trees and beds
  • Perennial and bulb division/propagation
  • and MORE - Just ask!
